HAMM2001 will be an important and useful opportunity to foster
communication between the EU and its trading partners in an area that can
be both profitable and problematic. Seafood products, particularly bivalve
molluscs, are potentially wholesome and valuable commodities that, by their
nature and origin, can present a significant risk to consumer safety due to
the accumulation of natural toxins from harmful algae.
It is challenging to implement programs for the control of such problems that are
effective.Toward this end it is important that there be good communication
and understanding among trading partners to ensure both that the programs
are as effective as intended, and that they are not mis-perceived as trade
barriers.
The goal of the HAMM conferences is to assist in communicating and
developing the technical foundations for sound policy; it is not a venue
for establishing policy or making agreements. We are particularly anxious
to ensure that the EU is well represented at this conference, to promote
better understanding between the EU and Pacific region economies.
