Seafood products, particularly bivalve</div> <div> molluscs, are potentially wholesome and valuable commodities that, by their</div> <div> nature and origin, can present a significant risk to consumer safety due to</div> <div> the accumulation of natural toxins from harmful algae. </div> <bR> <div> It is challenging to implement programs for the control of such problems that are</div> <div> effective.Toward this end it is important that there be good communication</div> <div> and understanding among trading partners to ensure both that the programs</div> <div> are as effective as intended, and that they are not mis-perceived as trade</div> <div> barriers.</div> <bR> <div> The goal of the HAMM conferences is to assist in communicating and</div> <div> developing the technical foundations for sound policy; it is not a venue</div> <div> for establishing policy or making agreements.
